About the von Karman Institute for Fluid Dynamics

Training in Research through Research at the Leading edge of Fluid Dynamics

About VKI

Education and Research Center at the Leading Edge of Fluid Dynamics

VKI is a non-profit international educational and scientific organisation, hosting three departments (aeronautics and aerospace, environmental and applied fluid dynamics, and turbomachinery & propulsion). It provides post-graduate education in fluid dynamics and encourages “training in research through research”. The von Karman Institute undertakes and promotes research in the field of fluid dynamics. Extensive research on experimental, computational and theoretical aspects of gas and liquid flows is carried out at the VKI under the direction of the faculty and research engineers, sponsored mainly by governmental and international agencies as well as industries.

Success in these activities requires integrating research into the training programs, linking basic and applied research, developing research programs in line with the needs of industry and large international bodies such as EU and ESA and carrying out all these activities in an international forum.

The experimental research is combined with world class expertise in numerical modeling and CFD. Used in combination, these are powerful tools that help engineers in design and problem solving for a large number of industrial applications.

The von Karman Institute for Fluid Dynamics has some of the most important and largest wind tunnel testing facilities in the world, ranging from subsonic, over transonic and supersonic to hypersonic flows, with speeds up to Mach 14 as well as plasma facilities such as the well-known “Plasmatron”, water tunnel, turbomachinery facilities, vehicle facility, wind gallery, water spray, aeroacoustics and solid propulsion facilities, industrial test rigs.
